Kingfisher junior high teams win 3 titles
Kingfisher’s junior high basketball teams brought home three tournament championships last weekend, including a sweep for the eighth graders at the Cashion-Crescent Junior High Tournament.
Eighth grade
The Lady Jackets won their first tournament of the season as they downed Perry 28-15 in the championship game Saturday in Cashion.
Natalie Dick scored nine points and Hope Stafford eight as KMS outscored the Lady Maroons in every quarter.
Up 15-8 at halftime, Kingfisher put it away with a 7-2 run in the third quarter.
Kingfisher opened the tournament with a 27-21 win against Oklahoma Bible Academy.
Mya Dewberry led that charge with 10 points while Dick added eight and Emily Myers five.
They followed it up Thursday by slipping past Cashion 28-26 in the semifinals.
Kingfisher’s 8-4 run in the second quarter was the difference in the game.
Dick paced the team with 11 points while Dewberry scored seven.
Lauren Jenkins led Cashion with nine points. Cashion went on to finish third after beating Crescent Saturday.
Kingfisher’s boys took down Hennessey 43-24 in the title game Saturday.
The Jackets raced out to a 21-2 lead and were never threatened.
Jax Sternberger led the early charge with eight points in the first quarter. He finished the game with 10 points.
Caden Kitchens led the team with 13.
Maddox Mecklenburg and Judson Birdwell scored five apiece.
Mecklenburg led the way Thursday in the team’s 28-20 win over Cashion in the semifinals.
He scored nine points, including six in the first quarter when KMS got on top 14-4.
Birdwell added six points while Drake Friesen chipped in five.
Friesen scored 12 points in the team’s tournament opener, a 51-24 victory over OBA.
KMS was up 22-2 after a quarter and 33-2 at half. Sternberger added nine points and Mecklenburg eight.
Cashion’s boys also took home third place in the tournament as they beat Santa Fe South on Saturday.
Seventh grade
The Kingfisher girls dominated their way to the Mini Wheat Capital championship in Chisholm. KMS won the title Saturday by hammering Woodward 40-11. Peyton Walker outscored Woodward by herself as she led KMS with 14 points. Siera Stitt added eight more and Kate Henderson chipped in six points. Kingfisher beat Alva 31-5 in Thursday’s semifinal game. Already up by 13 points at halftime, Kingfisher held Alva scoreless in the second half. Stitt led all scorers with nine points. Henderson and Addy Major scored five apiece. The team began the tournament with its closest game, a 27-17 triumph against Fairview. They trailed 9-7 after the first quarter, but went on a 7-2 run in the second. The Lady Jackets closed strong with an 8-0 run in the fourth as well. Stitt scored 11 to lead all scorers. Walker added nine. The Kingfisher boys finished fourth in the tournament. They opened with a 42-19 win against Fairview in which Cade Covalt scored 17 points. However, Alva outscored the Jackets 35-32 in the semifinals. Ethan Karcher scored nine points in the loss. Covalt and Eli Johnson scored eight apiece. The Jackets had to settle for fourth after a 36-31 loss to Chisholm in overtime Saturday. Covalt and Karcher scored 10 points apiece.
