Elsie Hunter
Elsie Mozelle Hunter was born Oct. 1, 1927, in Wellston, a daughter of the late Frank and Cattie Hughes, and passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon. She was 92.
She graduated from Central State College in Edmond with a bachelor’s degree and received a master’s degree in English from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
Her first year of teaching was in Gotebo and then she married Leonard Hunter.
Together, they had long, successful careers in public education, Leonard as a voag instructor and Elsie as an English teacher.
They taught in Cooperton, Indiahoma, Cordell and Kingfisher.
Both Leonard and Elsie were inducted into the Kingfisher Public Schools Hall of Fame.
After Leonard’s death in 1995, Elsie moved from Clinton to Spanish Cove in Yukon.
She is survived by daughters Jan Hurley and her husband Robert, and Kim Merrill and husband Randy; three granddaughters, Maci Villavincencio, Kenzie Birnstiehl and Holly Stetter; and three great-grandchildren, Julie Stetter, Kate Stetter and Simon Villavincencio.
In addition to her parents, Elsie was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Troy, and a sister, Vivian Tuttle.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 3, at the Yanda & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Yukon with interment following at the Wellston Cemetery at Wellston.
