Joe Wayne Harper, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and music educator, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, following a battle with cancer. He was 83.

He was born in Ada on January 18, 1941, to Clayton and Kathryn (Fuller) Harper.

Joe Wayne’s passion for music began in grade school. He excelled in music throughout high school and college, playing various instruments and even performing in the inaugural production of the musical “Texas.”

Following graduation, Joe Wayne dedicated his life to sharing his love of music. He served as a band director and music teacher in Texas and Oklahoma for over 30 years, inspiring countless students.

He was inducted into both the Oklahoma Bandmasters Hall of Fame and the Kingfisher High School Hall of Fame.

After retirement, Joe Wayne remained active in music, directing choirs and singing groups. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife Ruby and spending time with family.

Joe Wayne is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruby; son Wesley Harper and wife Stephanie; son Patrick Harper and wife Ginna; grandchildren Kayla and husband Drew Connolly, Greyson Harper, River Ply and husband Chevy (and daughter Paisley); brothers John Harper and wife Diedre, Gary Harper and wife Sandra, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Kathryn Harper and brother Richard Harper.

A memorial service was held Thursday, March 28, at ChristPoint Methodist Church, Lindale, Texas.
