Cashion drills Oilers in district opener; crowns royalty, Jerry and Stockton

Kellen Smith struck it rich against Merritt on homecoming.
The Cashion quarterback threw five touchdowns as the Wildcats blew out the Oilers 35-12 in their District A-1 opener.
Four of Smith’s TDs came in the first quarter as Cashion staked a 27-0 lead and was never threatened.
The win improved Cashion to 3-1 overall as it heads to winless Watonga this week.
The first-quarter touchdowns went to four different receivers.
Grayson Davis scored from 65 yards, Rival Fields from 10, Maxx Higdon from 3 and then Gavin Layton from 25.
Smith connected with Davis again in the third quarter, this time from 16 yards, as Cashion built its 34-0 lead.
Davis caught seven total passes for 126 yards. Higdon hauled in four for 90.
Smith was 16 of 22 for 266 yards.
However, it wasn’t just an air raid.
The Wildcats chewed up ground and clock with 177 rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Newcomer Jayden Bolton, playing in just his second game, managed 99 yards on just eight carries.
Fields picked up 72 yards on his nine attempts.
Meanwhile Cashion’s defense stuffed Merritt’s offense much of the night.
The Oilers didn’t score until the game was essentially over in the fourth and were held to 160 total yards Cashion defensive players combined for 14 tackles for losses, including three each by Timmy Jones, Kaleb Duran and Travis Loeffelhoz.
Jones led the team with 13 total tackles.
Duran added nine and Loeffelholz recorded eight.
Senior lineman Matthew Stockton added two tackles for a loss. Prior to the game, he was named homecoming king and he crowned queen Adilee Jerry, Cashion’s senior kicker who made 5 of 5 extra-point attempts in the game.
