Cashion squads start season with wins
Morrison had Briggs Roe.
Cashion had strength in numbers.
Quantity won out Friday night as Cashion opened its season with a 66-60 victory at home against the Wildcats.
A Kansas State commit in baseball, Roe also showed he’s got skills on the basketball court.
The senior poured in 36 points and shot 13 of 21 from the field.
“He’s a great athlete,” Cashion coach John Hardaway said. “And extremely tough to guard.”
Cashion countered with four players in double figures in the back-and-forth affair.
The Wildcats were led by Drake Woody’s 17 points, which included five of Cashion’s seven 3-pointers in the game.
The Wildcats outscored Morrison 21-12 from beyond the arc.
Nathan Nabavi added 16 points while Kamden Miller and Anthony Wilburn scored 10 apiece.
Wilburn led the team with seven boards while Miller had a team-high seven assists.
The teams were tied at halftime before Cashion opened up a nine-point lead by scoring 23 points in the third quarter.
The Wildcats were 15 of 23 from the line while Morrison made just eight free throws.
A pair of late defensive stands allowed Cashion to hold off Minco in an overtime thriller.
Cashion got stops at the end of regulation and then near the end of the overtime period last Tuesday in defeating the Bulldogs 71-69 on the road.
With the game tied late in regulation, the Wildcats forced a deep 3-point attempt by the Bulldogs, one that was well off the mark.
In overtime, Cashion built a lead as big as three points multiple times, but Minco cut it to 70-69 with just under a minute to play.
The Wildcats worked the clock down under 15 seconds before turning it over.
But on Minco’s possession, Carson Gump defended a baseline shot and Kamden Miller pulled down the miss. Miller made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.4 seconds left and Minco’s desperation 3-pointer hit off the back rim as time expired.
Anthony Wilburn led Cashion with 22 points.
The back-and-forth contest saw Cashion lead by three after a quarter, trail by five at half and lead by one entering the fourth.
Nathan Nabavi added 20 before fouling out near the end of overtime.
Drake Woody scored 17 and Miller eight for the Wildcats.

Madison Westerhoff caught fire to lead Cashion to a runaway win in its season opener.
Westerhoff nailed five 3-pointers in the second quarter alone as the Lady Wildcats thumped Morrison 59-31 at home last Friday night.
Cashion was already up by 11 points after it held Morrison without a field goal in the first quarter.
That’s when Westerhoff lit up the gym as Cashion extended its lead to 20.
Lauren Jenkins also made a trey in the 3-pointers. The six total treys accounted for all of Cashion’s points in the second.
Westerhoff ended up 6 of 7 from long range and scored a game-high 20 points.
Cashion made 10 total 3-pointers as a team.
Jenkins nailed three of them as part of her 13 points.
Megan Shafer was a big part of Cashion’s strong start when she scored all six of her points in a 15-4 first-quarter run.
It was Shafer’s turn to show out offensively last Tuesday.
The junior torched Minco for 28 points in an 73-44 road win.
Cashion led 18-8 after a quarter, then closed the half on a 19-5 run.
Shafer was one of three Lady Wildcats in double figures.
Reese Williams and Addison McCracken scored 11 points apiece.
Jenkins just missed double figures as she scored nine.
