Cushing knocks off Jackets on final day of WC
A bid for the consolation championship fell short Saturday.
Kingfisher couldn’t keep the momentum going from its second win of the season in a 50-37 defeat to Cushing in the fifth-place game of the Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm.
The Jackets scored a season high on Friday in knocking off Perry 61-47 in the consolation semifinal.
They scored at least 15 points in every quarter and steadily built their lead to 15 points entering the fourth quarter.
Coleman Gilles was a problem for the Maroons.
The KHS senior notched 21 points - 19 of them through three quarters.
Jhett Birdwell and Matthew Mecklenburg added the ammunition from the outside.
Birdwell buried three treys and scored 14 points. Mecklenburg knocked down two more as part of his 10 points.
It took the Jackets two quarters to get going again on Saturday. By that time, they trailed by 16 points.
That included an 18-8 run in the second quarter in which the Tigers hit four treys.
The Jackets got it to 12 points entering the fourth, but couldn’t close the gap.
Gilles led the team with 11 points. Jake Reagan scored 10, nine of them in the fourth.
