Early 3’s help DHS boys win

A red-hot start last Tuesday propelled the Dover boys basketball team to its fi rst win of the season.

“We came out on fi re,” said first-year coach Aaron Norton after his team knocked off Cimarron 49-43 in Dover.

The win was Norton’s first with the Longhorns as they improved to 1-1.

They did it on the strength of a 24-point first quarter in which they knocked down six 3-pointers.

Kasen Harviston and Emory Norton, the coach’s son, made three apiece.

Dover made eight treys in all and all were in the fi rst half.

The early barrage sparked Dover to an eight-point lead after the first quarter. It grew to 10 at halftime before Cimarron cut it in half after three quarters.

The Longhorns, though, made just enough free throws down the stretch to maintain their lead.

Joriaun Caldwell was 5 of 8 from the line in the fourth quarter and 7 of 12 for the game. He scored 13 for the Longhorns.

Harviston led the way with 16 points.

Norton finished with 12.

Payten Harmon scored 16 to pace the Blazers.

Lady Blazers defeat Dover girls 53-31

The Lady Longhorns put up a much bigger fi ght in their second game of the season, but still dropped a 53-31 decision to Cimarron.

“We had some good stretches, but then we had some stretches where we just played out of control and hurt ourselves,” coach Byron Randle said. “That’s what cost us.”

The Lady Longhorns fell behind 14-4 in the fi rst quarter, but were able to stay within 12 at the half.

The Lady Blazers slowly built on that advantage in the second half.

Dover got 12 points from Meadow Caldwell, all of them in the second and third quarters.

Yazaret Gamez added seven points and Madi Moeller six.
