Final buzzer sounds on junior high seasons

Kingfisher’s junior high basketball teams concluded their 2019 seasons last week and, once again, put together some stellar records.

None topped the eighth grade boys, who finished 18-1 on the season.

The Jackets lost just one game in the two-year junior high careers.

Those wins included beating Newcastle 49-16 on Jan. 31.

Maddox Mecklenburg was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 16 points.

Judson Birdwell added 15 points and seven rebounds.

As a team, KMS was 7 of 9 from 3-point range and outscored Newcastle in every quarter.

Cash Slezickey added another five points.

On Feb. 4, Kingfisher dealt Fairview a 32-17 defeat.

Mecklenburg again led the way, this time with 14 points, including four treys.

Caden Kitchens chipped in six points and seven rebounds while Slezickey also scored six.

The eighth grade girls were 14-5 on their season.

They defeated Newcastle 35-16 and Fairview 28-24.

Against Newcastle, Gentry Taylor led a balanced attack with 12 points.

Natalie Dick scored eight, Mya Dewberry seven and Hope Stafford six.

Dick paced the team against Fairview with 13 points while Emily Myers scored five.

The seventh grade girls capped their first junior high season with a 15-4 record.

One of those losses came at the hands of Newcastle, 32-27.

The Lady Jackets fell behind 15-2 in the first quarter before trying to claw their way back into it.

Peyton Walker led the team with 11 points. Addy Major and Emmy Lunsford scored five apiece.

The team bounced back to defeat Fairview 33-18.

Major scored 12 in the victory while Walker had nine.
