Jackets enter break with 8-0 mark

A trio of doubles in the ninth inning last Saturday helped Kingfisher’s baseball team enter Spring Break still undefeated.

Sophomore Ian Daugherty’s one-out double in the top of the ninth kick-started Kingfisher’s offensive rally in a 7-6 extra-inning win at Weatherford.

Daugherty’s hit was followed by Keaton Abercrombie’s two-bagger that scored Cade Stephenson, who was a courtesy runner for Daugherty, for the go-ahead run.

Will Taylor followed with yet another double to score Abercrombie, giving the Jackets a much-needed insurance run.

Daugherty closed out the game on the mound to earn the win.

He pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, struck out one and walked two.

The run he surrendered in the bottom of the ninth was unearned.

Kingfisher found a way to win despite striking out 10 times at the plate while walking just three times. KHS pitchers, meanwhile, offered up nine free passes against eight strikeouts.

Chase Gustafson got the start and gave up three earned runs and five hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Creighton Bugg got the call for the next 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered four hits and two runs, one of which was earned.

Those two combined to strike out seven and walk seven.

The Jackets trailed 3-2 entering the sixth when Tate Taylor’s single brought in a run to tie it up. Logan Rutledge scored on the throw to give KHS the lead.

Stephenson scored later in the frame for a two-run advantage, but it didn’t stick as Weatherford scratched together two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The score remained 5-5 until the ninth.

Abercrombie was 3-for-5 on the day and drove two runs. Tate Taylor had two hits and two RBIs while will Taylor collected a pair of hits and an RBI.

Daugherty and Zach Goodwin had two hits apiece while Goodwin scored twice.

The Jackets used less drama Friday in a 9-2 win at home against Chisholm.

Brady Friesen pitched all seven innings for the win. He sat down seven Longhorns while giving up three hits and three walks.

Goodwin’s RBI single in the second inning gave the Jackets the final run they needed, but they tacked on six more for good measure.

Goodwin had two of Kingfisher’s five hits.

Gustafson drove in two runs while Tate Taylor and Daugherty had one hit and one RBI apiece.

The wins upped Kingfisher’s record to 8-0.

Kingfisher plays Southmoore at 4 p.m. Thursday at Deer Creek High School and then Westmoore at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Edmond Memorial High School.

Both games are part of the Edmond Festival.
