A pair of lopsided wins on Saturday helped ease the pain of a disappointing defeat on Friday for the Kingfisher High School softball team.

The Lady Jackets wrapped up their own Highway 33 Classic tournament with victories of 9-2 over Enid JV and 10-1 over Chisholm on the consolation side of the bracket.

Those came after KHS went 1-2 in pool play games.

After beating Watonga 10-1 to open the tournament Thursday, the Lady Jackets fell 9-1 to defending champ Dibble later that night (Note: See weekend edition for recap of those games).

The team came back Friday and was dealt a 3-2 loss by Piedmont Gold, one of the 5A powerhouse’s junior varsity squads.

Piedmont Gold won Pool A, then beat Anadarko 10-2 in the semifinals Saturday before wrapping up the tournament title with an 8-0 victory against Clinton.

Nobody played Piedmont Gold tougher than KHS.

Merrin Evans kept the Lady Wildcats scoreless for three-plus innings, but an error in the fourth allowed Gold to plate two runs.

Gentry Taylor put Kingfi sher on the board in the bottom half of the frame when her single brought home Natalie Dick.

Kynli Boeckman tied it up with her own RBI single to score Mya Dewberry, but Kingfisher’s shot at taking the lead was dashed when Taylor was called out at home on the same play.

Piedmont reclaimed the lead in the fifth on an RBI double.

KHS got the leadoff batter on base in both the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t advance them.

Evans was dealt the loss despite her five strong innings of work. She held Piedmont to six hits and one earned run.

Dewberry had two of Kingfisher’s six hits in the game.

Saturday’s games saw the third-place team from Pool A (Kingfisher) take on the fourth-place team from Pool B (Enid JV) first and then later the third-place team from that pool (Chisholm).

Evans went all six innings in the circle and allowed just two hits and no earned runs against Enid JV. She struck out four batters.

Dewberry got KHS started offensively with an RBI that led to Dick scoring on an error.

It was the first of three hits in the game for Dewberry.

Dick, Siera Stitt, Jancee Matthews and Addyson Wilson had two hits apiece.

Evans drove in a pair of runs.

Dick earned the win against Chisholm as she threw four innings of fourhit ball.

The Lady Jackets were up 1-0 going into the bottom of the third when Dewberry’s double brought home three runs to start a six-run frame.

The senior catcher drove in four runs total.

Dick had two hits and 2 RBIs while Taylor Mills scored three times for the Lady Jackets.

The loss to Piedmont Gold in the championship was Clinton’s only defeat of the tournament.

The Lady Reds went 3-0 in winning Pool B and knocked off Dibble 4-3 in the semifinals.

Dibble beat Anadarko 9-3 in the third-place game.
