KHS district: Slam dunk
Kingfisher officially began its quest for a return trip to the state tournament with an alley-oop dunk Saturday night.
Things only got worse from there for Harding Charter Prep.
Jett Sternberger lobbed a pass to Matthew Stone, who threw it down for the game’s first two points in what turned into a 90-52 romp in their 4A district championship at the APB.
The win pushed the Jackets into this weekend’s regional tournament - also at home - where they play Classen SAS in a semifinal at 8 p.m. Thursday.
If it’s going to pull off the upset, Classen will need to avoid the start that was the fate of Harding.
The Eagles gave up a 27-0 run to the Jackets, one that included Stone dominating the inside and Jett Sternberger the outside.
Stone finished the quarter with eight points and Sternberger nine as he nailed three straight 3-pointers.
Up 47-21 at halftime, the Jackets extended their cushion with a 30-13 push in the third quarter.
That included a dunk by Bijan Cortes, who, after a steal, bounced the ball hard off the floor, caught it in the air and threw it down two-handed.
It also included four more treys by Sternberger, who got all 21 of his points from beyond the arc.
KHS made 17 of 34 3-point attempts.
Reece Lafferty added another four treys as the senior scored 16 points.
Stone led all scorers with 22.
Trey Green added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Cortes had six points and led the team with 11 assists.
Cayman McKinney paced the Eagles with 22 points, 14 of those in the second half.
The Jackets had 27 assists on 35 field goals and they shot 52.2 percent overall.
Top-ranked Kingfisher enters the regional with a 22-1 record and 16-game win streak.
Classen SAS is 12-13 and coming off a 57-47 win against Cushing in its district championship.
Stolz, Mueggenborg
have career nights
Two career-high scoring outputs Saturday helped the Kingfisher Lady Jackets to their largest margin of victory this season and another district championship.
KHS swallowed up Harding Charter Prep 75-23 to claim a 4A district title at the APB.
Katelyn Stolz and Jenna Mueggenborg led an attack that had 10 scorers, 29 offensive rebounds, 17 assists and 17 steals.
Stolz scored 26 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, all of which led the team.
The senior forward helped the Lady Jackets fight through a slow start as she had 14 points as KHS got out to a 16-6 lead.
She had 22 of her points by halftime and 10 of her rebounds were on the offensive end.
KHS led 39-12 at the break.
Mueggenborg, meanwhile, heated up in the second half where she scored nine of her 13 points as the Lady Jackets methodically pulled away from their guests.
The junior added four rebounds and three steals.
Ally Stephenson added eight points and three steals.
Hanna Matthews and Brennen Davis recorded seven points apiece.
Matthews dished out five assists while Davis grabbed nine rebounds - six offensive - in just 11 minutes.
KHS will play second-ranked Classen SAS at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a regional semifinal at the APB.
The winner will advance to Saturday’s regional championship, also at Kingfisher. The loser will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a consolation semifinal.
The Lady Jackets are 12-11. Classen SAS, which defeated Cushing 59-28 in its district, is 25-1.
