KHS gets offensive at Mount St. Mary

A 13-hit attack helped the Kingfisher softball team earn its first district sweep of the season.

That happened Monday with an 18-9 win at Mount St. Mary.

The victory snapped a five-game district losing streak that dated back to the team’s 9-1 home victory over the Lady Rockets on Aug. 24.

KHS got to work early with six runs in the top of the first inning.

That included RBI singles off the bats of Kinlee East, Jancee Matthews and Kynli Boeckman.

A fielder’s choice RBI thanks to a bunt from Adlee Friesen pushed the lead to 7-1 in the top of the second inning.

It got pushed to 12-1 with five more runs in the top of the third as Kinley Taylor and Boeckman picked up RBIs.

The bottom of that frame is when KHS faced its only adversity of the night.

KHS pitchers walked four straight batters, then hit a fifth.

After recording two outs, three more walked batters in a row and then a KHS error ultimately let MSM back in it with a seven-run inning.

East gave the Lady Jackets some more distance with a two-run double in the fourth inning.

The freshman finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.

Matthews, Boeckman and Shelby Davis also had two hits apiece.

Matthews scored three times while Liliana Garramone and Taylor scored twice each.

Mattie Slezickey crossed home four times for the Lady Jackets.

She also came in to pitch the final 4 1/3 innings for KHS.

A freshman, Slezickey gave up just one hit and one earned run. She walked three batters and struck out two.

KHS was 3-8 in District 3A-1 with the win and 1114 overall.

The team was slated to play Ringwood at home on Tuesday night (weather permitting, after deadline of this edition).

It travels to Bethany for its final district game on Thursday and completes the regular season at home next Monday against Chisholm.
