Lady Jackets 3rd in Highway 33 Classic
Kingfisher earned a 4-3 come-from behind win over Anadarko on a blistering Saturday afternoon to take third place in the Highway 33 Classic.
The win was Kingfisher’s third straight after starting the season 0-3.
The third loss in that streak came in Thursday’s opener of the tournament as Lindsay prevailed 7-0.
The Leopardettes went on to win the tournament in convincing fashion as they also had wins of 9-2 against Chisholm, 15-4 over Enid JV and 9-1 against Kremlin-Hillsdale in the championship.
KHS went 1-1 in its opening day games (see Aug. 20 edition) and then throttled Chisholm 14-2 in just three innings on Friday to take second place in its pool.
Bella Gomez allowed just one hit and no earned runs to grab her second win of the season.
Gomez also drove in two runs, as did Layla Kroener.
Six different Lady Jackets combined for seven hits, two of them off the bat of Adlee Friesen.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first, KHS scored nine times in the bottom of the frame to take command.
Jancee Matthews scored three times for KHS while Friesen and Kinley Taylor scored two runs each.
On Saturday, the Lady Jackets fell behind Anadarko 1-0 and 2-1 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good.
The entire third-inning rally came with two outs as Gomez got it going with a double.
Taylor - who earlier in the day ran for the KHS girls cross country team in Weatherford - followed it up with a single to put a pair of runners on base.
Kroener’s single tied the game as Gomez scored.
Kinlee East then made it a 3-2 KHS lead with her double to right field.
Kynli Boeckman reached on an error on a play that brought home Kroener for the 4-2 lead.
East made it stick as the freshman pitcher went all six innings.
Anadarko scored a run in the top of the sixth and had the tying run on base, but East struck out the final two batters to grab the victory.
East allowed six hits, walked four and struck out five.
East, Taylor, Kroener and Gomez each had one hit and one run.
Kingfisher got its first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when East walked and later scored on Shelby Davis’ single.
