Hundreds of elementary students watched - and cheered - Thursday as Kingfi sher began defense of its Buckle of the Wheatbelt championship.
The youngsters saw the Lady Jackets make it a successful beginning with a 5210 victory over Chisholm in the tournament’s first game.
The 10 a.m. tipoff allowed students from Gilmour, Heritage and Kingfisher Upper Elementary schools to watch the game, as has been the tradition the last couple of years.
“These kiddos were awesome today,” said KHS girls coach Taylor Young, responding to a KT&FP video of the future Jackets cheering from the stands.
They saw Kingfisher use a 15-0 run to take a 16-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Lady Jackets pushed it to 31-7 by half then went on a 15-2 run in the third.
KHS made nine 3-pointers in the game.
Talor Mecklenburg, Addy Matthews and Peyton Walker made three apiece.
Walker finished with a game-high 15 points.
She just missed a double- double in last week’s upset win at Anadarko, but got it this time around.
The senior had 11 steals and another 13 deflections.
Chisholm had 34 turnovers in the game, which led to 32 KHS points.
Mecklenburg finished with 12 points while Matthews scored 11.
Abbie Myers led the team with eight rebounds.

The Lady Jays held off Harrah 49-41 on Thursday.
Other first-round girls games saw Woodward outscored Guymon 74-65 and Weatherford pull away from Perkins-Tryon, 83-35.
