Everything doesn’t always add up.

Cashion scored 82 points in its season opener and standout senior guard Parker Mitchell poured in 43 of them.

Yet the Wildcats lost. A balanced Chisholm attack last Tuesday saw the visitors head home with an 86-82 win at Cashion.

Four Chisholm players scored in double figures, led by Noah Jackson and Cooper Westfahl, who combined for 40 points.

The two had a combined 15 field goals, all but one of them from inside the arc.

“They’re a real shifty team with a lot of kids who can create,” said Cashion coach John Hardaway. “They don’t have a lot of size, but they’re athletic and have a bunch of kids who can dribble and shoot.”

Cashion countered with Mitchell, who helped lead the Wildcats to the Class 2A state tournament a year ago, and fellow senior Kyle Yowell.

Mitchell also created, going 12 of 20 from the field, and took advantage of a fair share of opportunities at the free throw line.

Mitchell made 16 of 18 attempts.

Cashion, as a team, was 25 of 30 and Chisholm made good on 17 of 26 attempts.

“It was a long game,” noted Hardaway.

Yowell did a bulk of his work from beyond the arc as he made 5 of 13 3-pointers.

However, they were the only two Wildcats to reach double figures.

Still, Cashion made more free throws than Chisholm, more 3-pointers, had fewer turnovers and out-rebounded its guests.

But Chisholm had a 54-30 advantage on shots inside the arc.

“They did a good job of getting looks, but our defense left a little to be desired as well,” Hardaway said.

The teams kept it close throughout. Chisholm was up two after a quarter and the game was tied at the half.

The Longhorns built a bit of breathing room by outscoring Cashion 24-17 in the third.

Jackson led the Longhorns with 21. They also got 13 points from Teshon Medlock and 12 from Tayden Hamilton.

Lady Wildcats dominant in season opener The girls’ game didn’t have the scoreboard operators working quite as much - more specifically on the Chisholm side.

Cashion began its 202526 season with a 48-17 win at home over the Lady Longhorns.

The game was a blowout on its surface, but more so when digging a bit deeper.

Chisholm had just one point entering the fourth quarter.

By that time, five different Lady ‘Cats had at least one field goal.

Cashion led 17-1 after the first and watched the lead grow to 25-1 and then 41-1 after three quarters.

Brooke Shafer did much of the damage.

The junior forward scored in every quarter and finished her night with 24.

Her big quarter was the third when she scored 10 of Cashion’s 16 points.

Cashion made five 3-pointers as a team.

Two each were nailed by Tinley Meier and Aven Meuten.

Meier scored eight and Meuten six.
