Owasso rams Okarche into 7th place game
Warriors drop 2nd straight at TOC; Roby hits scoring milestone in loss
Okarche officially has a new streak.
It’s one the Warriors will want to end as soon as possible.
Class A’s top-ranked team was dealt a 91-44 loss by 6A Owasso on Tuesday in the consolation semifinals of the Tournament of Champions at Tulsa’s BOK Center.
It was Okarche’s second straight loss after seeing a 51-game win streak ended Monday in the opening round of the tournament against 5A’s Tulsa East Central.
The Warriors played for seventh place on Wednesday (after press time of this edition due to an early printing schedule) against another 6A school, Southmoore.
Owasso is the TOC’s defending champion and has reached the finals each of the last two years. However, the Rams are without standout guard Jalen Montonati, who is out with an unspecified arm injury.
Without the Oklahoma State University signee, the Rams lost 80-70 to Cascia Hall on Monday.
They immediately took their frustrations out on Okarche.
Owasso scored the game’s first 10 points and was never threatened. The Rams led 27-13 after a quarter and were up 45-19 at the half.
Okarche won the bulk of the games during its win streak by pressuring teams and scoring a ton of fast break points.
Owasso turned it over just 10 times, leading only to 7 Okarche points.
Meanwhile, the Rams were constantly beating the Warriors back to the tune of 34 fast-break points, which included 21 in the first half.
In the first quarter, Owasso was 11 of 13 from the field.
The Rams finished 36 of 60 (60 percent) including 12 of 27 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Okarche shot just 29.8 percent (14 of 47) for the game.
The Warriors struggled to find scoring outside of Jett Mueggenborg and Easton Roby.
The duo combined for 41 of the team’s points.
Mueggenborg had 26 points, but needed 24 shots to get there. He also led the team with 9 rebounds.
Roby scored 15 to go with 7 boards.
Both players made three 3-pointers.
For Roby, it was another career milestone. The senior surpassed 1,500 career points with his output.
The loss dropped Okarche to 10-2.
Southmoore lost to 3A No. 1 Millwood in the tournament opener and then to 5A’s Tulsa Memorial on Tuesday.
