Some are difficult, others not so much
Kingfisher had a nail-biter and a runaway late last week to push its win streak to 11 games.
The Lady Jackets were clutch at the free throw down the stretch Thursday as they held off Community Christian 46-35 on homecoming night at the APB.
They followed that up Friday with a 58-18 victory against Clinton on the road.
The Royals appeared intent on spoiling homecoming night.
The visitors held KHS to just three points in the second quarter to storm to a 24-19 halftime lead.
After three different Lady Jackets made a 3-pointer in a 16-point first quarter, KHS was held to just one field goal in the second.
The offense starting creeping back in the third as Mattie Slezickey and Reese Roof each made a trey.
Still, that only led to eight points in the frame. It was Kingfisher’s defense, however, that allowed the Lady Jackets to stay in it.
After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Community Christian was held to less than 30 percent in each of the final two quarters.
That included just four points in the third as the Lady Jackets pulled within a point.
With 4:30 to play, Roof started the decisive stretch as she knocked down a 3-pointer and followed it up with a steal and a layup to give KHS a 36-30 lead.
Then it became free throws that sealed the deal. After the team missed four early in the quarter, the Lady Jackets made 10 straight to pull away.
Ela Hartman made four of them and two each were added by Taitym Walker, Slezickey and Roof.
Roof paced the team with 13 points. She scored 10 in the second half.
Slezickey scored 11 and Hartman 9.
Prior to the game, Abbie Myers was crowned homecoming queen. She followed that up with 7 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals.
There were no clutch free throws needed against Clinton.
KHS scored the game’s first 14 points and was never challenged.
The only question of the night was if Rhylee Rodebush would score all of Clinton’s points.
The answer was no, but close.
Rodebush scored 16 and had all of Clinton’s points until Paisley Ruhle made two fourth-quarter free throws.
KHS was 7 of 21 from 3-point range which included a 4 of 6 effort from Roof.
She led all scorers with 18 points.
Slezickey again scored 11 and also had 3 assists and 4 steals.
Myers, Walker and Kendall Farrar notched 6 points apiece as Kingfisher improved to 18-3.
