At Kingfisher’s APB, you can’t pay cash to get in, but you can pay to get in to see Cash.

Cash Laird paid off in a big way last Friday as he led the Kingfisher Yellowjackets to a 61-48 victory against Clinton on homecoming night.

Laird scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Jackets gained a bit of revenge for a loss to the Red Tornadoes at the Alva Tournament last December.

With his ankle still swollen after rolling it the day before, Laird missed the teams’ first matchup, a 4942 defeat.

In that game, the Jackets struggled mightily against the zone defense, shooting 3 of 23 (13 percent) from long range.

This time around, the Jackets settled less for the long ball (4 of 12) and instead scored 28 points in the paint.

Laird was a big part as he was 7 of 12 from the field. He also went 11 of 15 from the free throw line.

The Jackets trailed for a good portion of the first quarter, but closed it strong to lead 15-9. They extended it to 27-17 by halftime.

Kingfisher then opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run to lead by 20 points late in the third.

“That’s when we’ve got to learn to really step on it and put a team away,” said coach Colby Connel. “But we didn’t do that tonight.”

He was right. The Reds began to press and the Jackets faltered just enough to let them back in it.

Twice in the fourth, Clinton got within single digits.

But the Jackets broke the press just enough to keep a safe distance.

Laird was 5 of 6 and Hayes White 4 of 6 from the free throw line in the fourth.

Jackson Willbanks and Paytun Burnham also finished shots at the rim to help extend the lead.

Titan Malone led the Reds with 15 points, seven of them in the fourth.

Ronnie Redshin scored 12.

White finished with 19 points and six rebounds.

Kasen Blair scored six while grabbing a game-high nine boards.

Kingfisher out-rebounded the Reds 38-25.

Jhett Birdwell also scored six points as the Jackets improved to 13-8.

KHS Girls Dominate Lady Reds

The benches cleared in Kingfisher’s 62-19 homecoming win over Clinton last Friday.

In a good way. Every Lady Jacket played and nine of them scored as they improved to 17-4 on the season.

KHS allowed just four field goals in the game and only one in the first half when it jumped to a 31-8 lead.

Homecoming queen Raegan Snider - who was crowned by fellow senior and king Maddox Jarvis in a ceremony prior to the game - was a big part of the fast start with her six first-quarter points.

She had 11 of her 15 points by halftime.

Abbie Myers led the scoring with 16 points. She had 13 of them in the second half.

Myers also led the team with six steals.

The team had 27 takeaways and scored 33 points off of Clinton’s 36 total turnovers.

KHS committed only six turnovers and had 15 assists.

Four Lady Jackets - Myers, Reese Roof (5), Maya Haney (5) and Jancee Matthews (4) - had at least four steals.

Ela Hartman added nine points for the Lady Jackets, including six in the second quarter.
