No. 1 Tuttle wins District 4A-2 duals
Kingfisher topples Douglass, drops matchups with Tigers, Newcastle
Not surprisingly, Tuttle will be moving on to the Class 4A dual state wrestling championships.
The top-ranked Tigers on Thursday swept the District 4A-2 duals in convincing fashion on their home mats.
Among those falling to the Tigers was Kingfisher, which lost 69-9 in their matchup.
Tuttle also beat Newcastle 74-3 and Douglass 84-0.
The Tigers have won 13 consecutive dual state championships.
The Yellowjackets went 1-2 on the day.
The Jackets were narrowly defeated by Newcastle 39-30, but knocked off Douglass 51-30.
The showdown with the Trojans came down to the final three weights.
After Douglass got a pin at 175, it was within 36-30 of KHS.
But Jose Santoyo gave the Jackets some cushion with a 9-8 decision over Chris Curry at 190 pounds.
KHS closed it out at 215 and heavyweight as Robert Barnett and Braxton Shellstrom racked up pins.
Until the last three matches, it was largely a back-and-forth dual.
The teams were tied 12-12 after the first four weights as they swapped forfeits.
KHS got another forfeit win at 132 and then Brayden Kochenower pinned Richard Ligon at 138 in the first actual match.
That put the Jackets up 24-12, but the Trojans came right back with a pin at 144 and forfeit win at 150 to tie it up again.
KHS once again went up by 12 points as Will Mercer picked up a forfeit at 157 and Jairo Velarde pinned Jamariyon Franklin at 165.
The Trojans only got as close as six points the rest of the dual.
The dual with Newcastle was also a nail-biter, but the Jackets couldn’t overcome a four-weight stretch that saw them go from a 12-point lead to a deficit of the same amount.
Barnett stopped the Racers’ run with a 7-4 decision over Maddox Snow at 190 pounds.
That pulled KHS within 33-24 with two weights left to wrestle.
Kingfisher’s comeback hopes were dashed at 215 when Randy Nix earned a pin for the Racers, putting their lead back to 15 points.
Shellstrom completed the dual with a pin over Nicholas Lozano in just 37 seconds.
Both teams forfeited at 106 pounds.
The dual started at 113 pounds.
The Racers took a 9-0 lead after two weights, but KHS won the next four.
Gant Browning earned a forfeit at 126.
Kochenower then pinned Ryan Trozzi at 132 and Casen Chlouber earned a 10-5 decision against Ethan Hobbs at 138.
Damien Haynes then followed that up by pinning Ryder Jones at 144 to give the Jackets a 21-9 advantage.
The Racers got a forfeit and three falls at the next four weights to flip the dual.
Browning and Santoyo were the bright spots against Tuttle.
Browning, a returning state qualifier, beat Tuttle’s Kole Parker 6-0 at 126 pounds.
Santoyo pinned the Tigers’ Luke Fallwell at 175 pounds.
