M-O poses no problem for Lady Longhorns
Medford puts Dover boys in consolation bracket
Any potential drama in Dover’s Class B district championship game was quickly put to rest.
The Lady Longhorns pounced on Mulhall-Orlando early on Saturday and used that to claim a 44-23 victory at home.
The district title keeps Dover in the winner’s bracket entering this week’s regional. The 12thranked Lady Longhorns play No. 20 Kremlin-Hillsdale on Thursday at Fairview.
Four different Dover players scored as it jumped to a 16-2 lead on M-O.
Karlee Harviston scored six of those points and Rylee Buck five more.
Although the visitors never made a charge, Dover only outscored them by seven the rest of the way.
“It was a good start, which is what you want to see in a game like that,” said coach Matt Peck.
“But we had some lapses the last three quarters. We have to play a more complete game moving forward in the playoffs.”
Harviston led all scorers with 16 points.
Her sister Katelyn Harviston added another 12 while Ashley Gamez scored eight.
Dover upped its season mark to 21-5. Kremlin Hillsdale enters Thursday’s matchup with a 19-6 record. It’s won eight straight, including 60-24 against Burlington in its district title game.
Dover batters Billings, beaten by Medford
Dover avoided elimination once.
Now the Longhorns will face it every time they step on the court.
The Longhorns assured themselves a spot in this week’s regional tournament last Friday when they thumped Billings 62-35 in an elimination game at home.
They were unable to ride that momentum the next night when Medford knocked them off 57-32 in a Class B district title game.
The loss knocked Dover into the consolation bracket.
Dover’s run through that side starts Thursday afternoon against Timberlake in the regional at Fairview.
Nathan Cohee erupted in the win over Billings.
Cohee came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers as Dover got out to a 17-8 lead.
He didn’t cool off. Cohee nailed five more treys and scored a gamehigh 23 points.
The Longhorns also got four 3-pointers and 12 points from Damion Turner.
As a team, the Longhorns made 16 treys in the game.
That didn’t carry over against the Cardinals when they were limited to two treys on Saturday.
Medford was able to get out to its own 16-7 lead early and never let it go.
They had three players reach double figures, led by Zach Hancock’s 17.
Pedro Valles led the Longhorns with nine points.
The loss pushed Dover’s record to 9-16.
