2 county basketball tournaments offer warm entertainment options
Although the weather will be improved later this week, it’s still going to be cold outside.
Kingfisher County will feature a couple of warm, indoor options for basketball fans beginning Thursday.
Kingfisher is hosting its annual Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational and then further east will be the Cashion County Line Tournament.
KHS is the defending champion in the girls and boys brackets as both teams defeated Weatherford in the championship games last season.
That feat can’t be replicated this year as the Weatherford boys won’t be taking part.
The Eagles were a part of the Tournament of Champions field this season and opted out of the Buckle.
Altus took the Weatherford boys’ spot here this year.
Kingfisher is the fourth seed and will play Guymon at 5 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
Guthrie is the top-seeded boys team. The Bluejays are 11-1 on the season (at press time) and, ironically, their lone loss is to Weatherford.
Perkins-Tryon, undefeated and ranked fifth in Class 4A, is the second- seeded team.
Other boys teams are Harrah, Chisholm and Woodward.
The Lady Jackets are the top seed in the girls bracket.
They’ll take on Chisholm in the first game of the tournament at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Weatherford, ranked 13th in Class 4A, is the second seed.
Joining them this year are Perkins-Tryon, Woodward, Guymon, Guthrie and Harrah.
Cashion’s tournament has quickly developed into one of the best smallschool fields in the state... and that’s despite not having perhaps the state’s top-drawing team this year.
Like Weatherford, the Dale boys played in the Tournament of Champions and won’t be joining their girls at the County Line.
Still, the boys bracket has five ranked teams.
Leading the way is Oklahoma Christian School, the top seed that’s ranked second in Class 3A.
Also ranked are No. 2 seed Community Christian (14th in 4A), third-seeded Fairview (17th in 2A), fourth-seeded Cashion (14th in 2A) and fifth-seeded Varnum (eighth in B).
Cashion and Varnum play at 3 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
The girls bracket has four ranked teams.
The Dale girls, ranked No. 1 in 2A, are the top-seeded team.
Cashion is the second team and is ranked eighth in 2A.
Also ranked are Varnum (eighth in B) and Perry (11th in 3A).
All six county teams are taking part in tournaments this week.
Dover is in the 100th annual Skeltur Tournaent at the Stride Center in Enid.
Lomega is taking part in the Cherokee Strip Conference Tournament at Pioneer.
Okarche heads east to take part in the Coyle Invitational.
Hennessey heads further east for the Yale Tournament.
