Lomega dominates Vici for district titles

The rubber match - and the district championship goes to Lomega.

The Raiders and Vici had previously played each other twice this season.

Lomega edged the Indians 65-64 on Dec. 1 at home and Vici repaid the favor by a 65-63 margin on the final day of the Hammon Tournament about five weeks later.

The two squared off - perhaps - for the final time back in Lomega on Saturday night with a Class B district title on the line.

Thanks to a much more sound defensive performance, Lomega prevailed 47-36 to remain in the winner’s bracket entering this week’s regional.

“Our defense was definitely a lot better than the first two times,” said coach Justin Edsall.

“Especially in the third quarter.”

That’s when the Raiders took full control as they used a 13-3 run to take a commanding 17-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Once there, Chase Burton made his fourth and fifth 3-pointers of the game to help dissuade thoughts of a Vici comeback.

Burton scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the second and third quarters, which were dominated by the Raiders.

Vici led 9-7 after the first before Lomega outscored the Indians 17-8 in the second.

Burton made two treys in that quarter and another in the third.

Lance Yost added 12 points while Ben Marsh scored 11.

The Raiders, ranked 15th in Class B, improved to 16-10 and snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.

They’ll play No. 14 Balko (18-4) Thursday night in Taloga to open the regional tournament.

Senior Swart shines in final home game

Abby Swart has made dozens upon dozens of 3-pointers in her home gym.

Her last one came Saturday night.

The Lomega High School senior sank five treys and scored a gamehigh 22 points as the Lady Raiders cruised past Vici 90-31 in their Class B district championship game.

With the win, Lomega moved into this week’s regional winner’s bracket.

The Lady Raiders play Balko on Thursday night in Taloga. The remainder of the regional will be played in Leedey.

Swart, who’s been a part of one state championship and two state runner-up teams, had 11 points by the end of the first quarter as Lomega took control early.

Hadley Ott added eight points and Aliana Lawson seven more to help guide their team to a 36-5 lead through just eight minutes.

The advantage swelled to 58-14 by halftime.

Swart had 16 points by that point and added two more treys in the third quarter as the lead was extended to 79-21.

She wasn’t the only Lady Raider hitting from the outside.

Monse Rivera, Jenny Penaran and Claire Myers all knocked down two treys.

Seven different Lady Raiders combined to make 14.

Penaran finished the game with 10 points.

Ott and Lawson scored nine points apiece.

Ranked second in Class B, Lomega goes into the regional with a 24-2 record. Balko enters the matchup with a 15-6 record.
