Kira Matthews

Kira Lynette (Schmult) Matthews made her grand entrance to the world on Nov. 26, 1984, in Chickasha.

The first and only daughter of Marcy and Bill Schmult, Kira’s arrival was an unexpected blessing.

As young parents, Marcy and Bill struggled in the beginning like all new parents do. Bill shared a story that during a fit of crying, baby Kira grabbed her daddy’s finger and was immediately comforted. It was then he knew that he and Marcy were going to be exactly the kind of parents their little girl needed and they would make it through the challenges of parenting together.

With her dad serving in the military, relocating was a norm in Kira’s early years. She lived in Ft. Worth, Texas, and attended elementary school in New Mexico.

She was raised alongside her younger brothers Kieran and Keyton.

The family put down roots in Marcy’s hometown in Tuttle, where some other beloved members of her family lived as well.

It was at that time Kira entered fifth grade at Tuttle Public Schools and thus began the start of a friendship of almost 30 years with “The Abbys” - Amanda and Heather - and Kira was true to her word that she would be their BFF (best friend forever).

“Girls Night Out” will never be the same without her infectious laughter and random bouts of song and dance. If there wasn’t karaoke in Heaven before, there definitely is now.

Kira was gifted in the arts from a young age.

She found her passion for dance while taking classes from Ms. Tami at Steppin’ Out Dance Studio.

Over the years, she gave award winning performances in jazz, pom, tap and ballet.

Kira also played piano, took voice lessons and found her love for musical theater while performing at the historic Tuttle Opera House.

It was then she became a certified triple threat with her dancing, singing and acting skills.

While at the Opera House, she captivated audiences and was a crowd favorite. One of Kira’s particularly memorable roles was singing and dancing to “Don’t Tell Mama” as a saloon girl in the musical Firecracker Follies.

Kira decided to use this number as her talent in the Miss Tuttle pageant. Costumed in a saloon girl dress complete with feathered hairpiece and lace garter, she danced and sang for the packed stadium while using a Britney Spears-style headset microphone.

Twenty-six contestants tried to compete with their best talents, but it was Kira who received the Overall Talent Award and was named second runner-up.

Kira shared with a friend that the talent award was what she had hoped to get because her mom had won that same category when she competed in Miss Tuttle.

Needless to say, that was a very big accomplishment to her. Continuing with her love for music, Kira played the flute in the Pride of Tuttle Marching Band where she served as Drum Major her senior year.

Not only was she talented and beautiful, but she was an excellent student as well. Kira graduated as a valedictorian with the Tuttle High School class of 2003.

Kira went on to earn her associate’s degree in science and attended the Oklahoma Health Academy where she became certified as a dental assistant.

She was delighted to find a practice that was a perfect fit for her at Kingfisher Family Dental & Implant Clinic working under Dr. Drew Hendrix DDS.

More than just a boss, Kira considered Dr. Drew a good friend and an honorary member of her family. She was someone Dr. Hendrix could count on and he provided her the opportunity to develop new skills and flourish.

She not only knew how to perform her dental assistant duties, but she was knowledgeable about many things that helped keep the office running smoothly.

Shewaswhoherco-workers would go to with their questions and she was considered a beloved mentor to many. Her work family and patients will dearly miss her impromptu singing and dancing.

She leaves some very big shoes to fill because there will never be anyone quite like Kira.

Kira married Tim Matthews and from that union was blessed with two sons, Declan Jerome and Owen Theodore.

Being a mother to Declan and Owen was her greatest joy and everything she did was to give the boys the best possible life she could provide for them.

She was an involved mom who was present for their activities and was always so proud of not only their athletic talent, but also how smart, sweet and funny they were.

She was truly their #1 fan.

Kira was strong in her Catholic faith and was very intentional with establishing the boys’ foundation of faith.

Kira was raised attending St. Joseph Catholic Church in Union City, where she was confirmed, sang in the choir and helped her mom to teach Sunday school.

It was at this very church that her sons were baptized.

While living in Kingfisher, she attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she continued to guide her children through the sacraments of faith.

At only 39 years of age, after a very brief, but intense fight against metastatic melanoma, Kira went to live in Heaven on Monday, May 6, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.

The day before her passing, many of her family, coworkers and dearest friends were able to come to the hospital and tell Kira how much they loved her and how much they would miss her.

Kira is survived by her sons Declan and Owen; their father Tim Matthews; parents Marcy and Bill Schmult; brother Kieran Schmult; brother Keyton Schmult; along with her aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too many to count. Kira also loved her dog Issac and cats Barry and Mavis.

While we are all heartbroken that we won’t get to see our beautiful and beloved Kira in this life, we are comforted to know she is now hanging out with Jesus and having an amazing reunion with her paternal grandparents Alicia and William Schmult and maternal grandparents Janie and Ted Hodges.

This is not a goodbye to Kira, but more of a see you later.
