First day of tournament action offers its share of big moments, games

With students from every Kingfisher Public Schools campus filling the stands, the KHS girls got their repeat bid set off on a good note.
The Lady Jackets downed Guthrie 61-18 Thursday morning in the first game of the tournament.
The top seed in the tournament, KHS led 20-4 after a quarter and 36-7 by halftime.
Eleven different Lady Jackets scored, led by Reese Roof’s 13 points.
Abbie Myers contributed 11 while Mattie Slezickey scored eight and Raegan Snider seven.
Kingfisher played Woodward in Friday’s semifinal (after press time).
The Jackets were sluggish to start, but woke up enough for a 50-22 victory in the first boys game of the tournament.
Also the top seed, Kingfi sher fell behind 2-0 early but closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run.
Eleven of those points were scored by Hayes White, who finished the game with 22.
Daxx Compton came off the bench to provide a spark on both ends. The freshman ended the game with 10 points.
Jhett Birdwell added seven. The Jackets took on defending tournament champ Guthrie in Friday’s semifinal.
Cashion County Line
Parker Mitchell provided the game winner as Cashion outlasted Clinton 53-51 in boys quarterfinal action.
The Wildcats and Reds were tied at 51-51 before Cashion chewed more than a minute off the clock at the end of the fourth quarter.
After a timeout with 12 seconds left, Mitchell drove past his man and laid it off the glass with five seconds to go for a two-point lead.
The Red Tornadoes shot a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that was off the mark.
Mitchell finished the game with 15 points for Cashion, which trailed by two points entering the fourth.
The Wildcats were led by Drake Woody’s 17 points while Carson Gump scored eight.
Cashion played Riverside in Friday night’s semis.
The Cashion and Clinton girls didn’t offer the same dramatics.
Cashion cruised into the semifinals with a 50-21 victory.
The home team led 11-4 after a quarter, then put the game away with a 16-5 run in the second.
Megan Shafer matched Clinton’s output with a game-high 21 points.
Abby Hobgood chipped in 10 points.
Cherokee Strip Conference Lomega’s second meeting with Ringwood in three days went much like the first. The Raiders toppled the Red Devils 82-43 in the opening round of the conference tournament.
Jaxson Snowden had the hot hand in the first half as the Raider junior scored 20 of his game-high 28 points.
Chase Burton had a solid eight points by halftime, but then caught fire in the third quarter. He nailed three 3-pointers and scored 17 points to finish his night with 25.
Lomega also got 12 points from Ben Marsh to help set up a matchup with Kremlin-Hillsdale in the semifinals.
The defending champ Lady Raiders dispatched of Deer Creek-Lamont quickly and easily in a 91-7 victory. It was 32-0 after the opening quarter.
Seven different Lomega players scored in that quarter alone and 13 did in the game.
They were led by Reagan Snowden and her 15 points. Paige Wheeler scored 13, Aliana Lawson 12 and Bree Yost 10.
Lomega took on Cherokee in the semifinals.
Skeltur Conference
It was a slow start, but strong enough finish for the Dover Lady Longhorns.
They played their way into the semifinals with a 42-34 win over Covington- Douglas in the quarterfi nal round of the Skeltur Conference Tournament at Stride Bank Center in Enid.
Dover scored just one first-quarter point. Despite getting going offensively in the second, Dover still trailed 17-14 at the half.
A 15-6 run in the third quarter gave Dover the lead for good.
Rylee Buck scored 12 to lead the way.
Joi Caldwell added 11 and Kynli Boeckman nine.
The tournament’s reigning champ, Dover played top-seeded Waukomis in the semifinal on Friday.
The Longhorns were matched up with Garber in the semifinals after thumping Pioneer 61-19 in the quarterfinal.
The Dover boys led 29-1 after one quarter.
Jonah Pendergraft scored 13 of his 20 points in that period.
The Longhorns also got 10 points from Casen Buck and eight apiece from Lucas Conrady and Brennan Fletcher.
Yale Invitational
A lot of teams feel good about scoring 56 points in a game.
Hennessey’s Camdyn Richardson got it all on his own.
The Eagle senior torched the nets for a school record in Thursday’s 99-69 quarterfi nal win for the Eagles.
Richardson made eight 3-pointers on the night and went 14 of 14 from the foul line.
He scored 17 in the second quarter when Hennessey extended its lead to 23 points. He added 18 more points in the third quarter.
His worst quarter? The first, when Richardson scored “only” 10 points.
Hagen Copeland joined Richardson in keeping the gym warm with five 3-pointers and 25 points.
The Eagles played host Yale in Friday night’s semifi nals.
The girls’ quarterfinal between those two schools was decidedly lower scoring, but offered the same result. The Lady Eagles gutted out a 38-18 victory against Woodland to move into the semifinals.
Woodland had its threegame win streak snapped by being held to six points or fewer in every quarter.
A 13-4 run in the second quarter allowed Hennessey to double up the Lady Cougars 20-10.
Emma Copeland scored eight in that quarter and led her team with 11 points. Clare Munroe chipped in nine points.
Coyle Invitational
Okarche matched up with a pair of JV squads and easily moved into the semifinal round.
The boys downed Cashion JV 84-32. The Warriors were up 36-6 after a quarter and set it on cruise control the rest of the evening.
Jett Mueggenborg scored 22 points to lead the team. Easton Roby added 15 while Hunter Mueggenborg chipped in 13.
Grayson Little paced Cashion JV with eight points.
Okarche was set to play Oklahoma Christian Academy in Friday’s semifinal.
The Lady Warriors picked up a 57-16 victory over Cushing JV to set up a matchup with Three Rivers Conference foe Crescent in the semifinals.
Up 22-5 after a quarter, Okarche breezed through the rest of the game.
Katie Parham led all scorers with 22 points. She scored 17 in the first half.
Harper White added seven points for the Lady Warriors as 11 different players scored.
