Late shot by Hooker spoils bid for CHS sweep
Cashion beat Hooker in almost every statistical category of their girls championship game Saturday at the NextEra Energy Resources Invitational in Garber.
Unfortunately, one of them is the one that matters most.
Rubi Hernandez scored with 15 seconds left to give Hooker a 3432 lead that would stick as the Lady Bulldogs won the title.
The Hernandez game winner came on a lob to the backside of Cashion’s defense with 15 seconds left, giving the Lady Wildcats plenty of time to answer.
However, Cashion’s next possession ended with the last of its 17 turnovers in the game.
After Hooker missed two free throws, Cashion had one last desperation 3-pointer that missed at the buzzer.
It was the first loss of the season for 12thranked Cashion, which dropped to 5-1.
It was in contention despite shooting 3 of 17 from 3-point range.
The teams traded leads as Hooker led by two after a quarter and Cashion by one at the half.
No. 15 Hooker retook the lead entering the fourth.
Addison McCracken led Cashion with 12 points while Megan Shafer scored 10.
Shafer led another balanced scoring attack in Friday’s 52-35 semifi nal win over host Garber.
The senior scored 14 points as Cashion outscored the Lady Wolverines in each of the first three quarters, building a 21-point lead along the way.
McCracken chipped in eight points while Kate Nabavi, Madison Westerhoff and Brooke Shafer scored seven points apiece.
