Otey, Santoyo are wrestling royalty
Taygen Otey was crowned the queen and Jose Santoyo the captain Tuesday night when Kingfisher High School celebrated its 2025 wrestling homecoming.
The two were announced in front of a large crowd at the Heritage gymnasium prior to KHS taking on Bridge Creek in both girls and boys duals.
On that mat, Bridge Creek won both duals.
The Bobcats won the girls by a score of 30-16 and the boys 47-30.
After being crowned and changing from her gown to her singlet, Otey did win her match at 120 pounds.
The senior earned a 10-1 major decision over Nalyssa Metheny.
Kingfisher’s two other wins were via falls.
Rylee Hamil earned one at 115 pounds over Maylee Salinas while Delissa Evans picked up one at 140 pounds against Kailen Williams.
The Jackets dropped the first two matches of their showdown with the Bobcats and continued to play catch-up the rest of the night.
Maliki Haynes gave KHS its first win when he picked up a 12-3 major decision over Jesse McCullar at 120 pounds.
That got KHS within 12-4, but the Jackets were pinned in three of the next four weight classes to fall behind 30-9.
Breaking up those pins was Jaxon Sheppard at 136 pounds.
He out-classed Gavin Schalk with a 16-1 technical fall.
Abe Prieto was the next Jacket grappler to earn a win in what proved to be the closest match of the night.
His up-and-down match with Kash Depron at 150 pounds saw Prieto prevail 11-7.
Bridge Creek led 30-12 after that match, but picked up 17 points over the next three weight classes for a 47-12 advantage.
KHS won the three largest weight classes, two of them by forfeit.
Those were Asher Lawrence at 190 and Santoyo at heavyweight.
Ryker Long pinned the Bobcats’ Tristan LeBlanc at 215 pounds.
