Soccer squads sweep district games
Kingfisher stayed unbeaten in district action with a mercy rule win Tuesday and has its eyes set on a bigger matchup this weekend.
KHS downed Millwood 10-0 at home to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in District 3A-2 games.
Kinsleigh Willms punched in the final goal with 24:15 still left in the match to put the contest to an end with the 10-goal rule.
She was one of seven Lady Jackets to score at least one goal, led by senior Natalie Garrett’s first career hat trick.
Garrett netted three shots in the first half as Kingfisher built up an 8-0 lead.
Ariana Rivera scored twice for Kingfisher while Maya Haney, Kinlee East, Jennings Broddle and Harper Evans joined Willms in scoring one apiece.
Seven of Kingfisher’s goals were assisted as Yessenia Rivera and Karen Muñoz had two each.
Evans, Broddle and Molly Weber each had one.
Weber’s set up the final goal on a corner kick.
Liliana Garramone wasn’t tested much.
Kingfisher’s keeper had one save in the shutout victory.
The Lady Jackets traveled to Crossings Christian on Friday (after press time).
Crossings also entered the matchup unbeaten in district play and defeated KHS twice last year, including in the first round of the playoffs.
Jackets get 6-0 victory
The Kingfisher boys completed the sweep and duplicated the shutout… but against a different opponent.
The Jackets downed Dove Science Academy 6-0 on Tuesday to improve to 5-3 on the season.
The victory also moved the Jackets to 2-1 in District 3A-2.
There are three unbeaten teams in the district: Crossings Christian, Mount St. Mary and Crooked Oak.
The Jackets lost to Crooked Oak earlier this season, played at Crossings on Friday (after press time of this edition) and has a makeup game at home with Mount St. Mary on Monday. Two other teams have one district loss: ASTEC Charter and Corn Bible Academy. The Jackets host both of those teams. Four different Jackets scored against Dove Science as Kingfisher posted three goals in each half. Eduardo De La Torre scored less than three minutes into the game, the first of his two goals. The sophomore also scored with 25:01 left in the second half for the team’s fifth goal.
Santiago Ortega scored at 26:47 of the first half for a 2-0 lead and then Jake Sisk added the third goal with 5:13 to go in the half.
Ortega got his second goal just 2:10 into the second half and Abel Guzman rounded out the scoring on a penalty kick with 23:15 left to play.
Sisk and Julian Marshall had one assist apiece.
Goalkeeper Elijah Click picked up three saves in earning his clean sheet.
