Wrestlers down Woodward on Senior Night
Three underclassmen made sure Kingfisher High School’s senior night for wrestling was a success.
Juniors Mason Alig and Jose Santoyo and sophomore Diego Arreguin nabbed first-period pins Tuesday night to help secure a 57-21 home dual win over Woodward at Heritage Gym.
KHS led 21-15 through the first seven weights, but then began to pull away.
The Jackets got a forfeit at 150 pounds before Arreguin needed just 53 seconds to pin Cory Heckman at 157 pounds.
That put KHS up 33-15. The Boomers bounced back with a fall at 165, but Alig and Santoyo locked it up at the next two weights.
Alig pinned Danny Phillips in 1:26 at 175 pounds and Santoyo used only 51 seconds to pin Dane Harris at 190 pounds.
Kingfisher then got forfeit victories at 215 and heavyweight.
Six of the 14 weight classes were forfeits and five of those went the Jackets’ way.
Kingfisher won five of the eight contested weights.
The first of those went to one of those seniors honored before the dual, Gant Browning.
He earned an 11-4 victory over James Haney at 132 pounds to break what was a 12-12 tie to give the Jackets a three-point edge.
Brayden Kochenower followed that up with a 39-second pin at 138 pounds to give Kingfisher a 21-12 advantage.
Bryce Koker knocked off Kingfisher’s Damien Haynes 13-6 at 144 pounds to get the Boomers back within six points.
Kingfisher is off until Friday when it begins a Class 3A regional at Marlow.
The KHS girls host a 5A regional Tuesday at the APB.
