Coming off back-to-back lopsided losses, the Dover Lady Longhorns put on a good shooting display Friday to get back in the win column.

Dover nailed eight 3-pointers to easily dispatch of visiting Ringwood 45-28.

All of the treys came in the first three quarters as Dover dominated them for a 43-14 lead.

Presley Squires had the hottest hand as she made four of those 3-pointers.

She scored 5 in the first quarter as Dover jumped to a 15-5 lead.

Vanessa Sotelo added two of Dover’s four treys in the second as the lead swelled to 31-8.

Squires chipped in two more in the third and finished the game with 15 points.

Emerson Belt and Sotelo scored 6 apiece.

Dover moved its season record to 6-18 with one regular season game remaining.

Wounded Longhorns drop 2nd game

The regular season of Class B-II’s top-ranked team has hit a bit of a speed bump.

After winning its first 20 games, Dover lost for the second time in three games last Thursday at Okeene.

The Whippets’ Lincoln Feely hit three big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help lead his team to a 38-37 upset of the Longhorns.

Feely’s treys were his first points since the first quarter.

That also was when Dover sophomore guard Daxx Compton was lost for the game. Compton scored 4 points in the early going, but rolled his ankle just 6 minutes in. The team’s second leading scorer on the season, Compton didn’t return. That put the bulk of the scoring load on junior Casen Buck’s shoulders. He responded with 25 points, but got little other help. The game was tied 19-19 at halftime and Dover was held without a field goal in the third quarter. Still, Buck made eight free throws and the contest continued to be tied. In the fourth, Feely knocked down his trio of treys and finished with 14 points.

A.J. Avila and Kyler Williams joined Compton in scoring 4 points each for Dover.

The Longhorns returned home Friday night to a more familiar result as they thumped Ringwood 72-21.

Dover was still without Compton, whose return from the ankle injury is still unknown as the playoffs begin this weekend.

Buck scored 21 in just three quarters, but this time got considerably more help.

Avila made three 3-pointers and scored 13.

Marco Sotelo added 12 points while Brennan Fletcher chipped in 9.

Dover is 22-2 with one regular season game remaining (Tuesday after press time).
