Top-ranked Weatherford soars past KHS boys
Kingfisher was able to hang in there for much of the first quarter.
But, eventually, the size, skill and any number of other positive attributes possessed by Class 4A’s top-ranked team proved too much.
The Weatherford Eagles won their 20th game last Tuesday by downing visiting KHS 79-40.
The teams were tied 4-4 midway through a feeling- out period in the first quarter before the Eagles went on a 12-0 run.
They steadily built on that lead throughout the rest of the night.
Featuring the length of the 6-foot-7 Sage twins and the 6-foot-6 future Oklahoma Sooner C.J. Nickson, the Eagles were actually sparked by their guards.
Cash Jennings came off the bench to score five of his seven points in the first quarter.
Starter Jackson Smith nailed four first-half treys three in the second quarter - as the home team took a 39-18 lead.
Hayes White did his best to keep the Jackets in it.
Despite being guarded by bigger opponents, he scored 12 of the Jackets’ points by halftime.
The junior finished with 18.
Cash Laird came alive in the fourth when he scored 10 of his 12 points.
Nickson led Weatherford with his 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Smith scored 15 while Tate Sage added 14 and Walker Kennedy 12.
The loss saw the Jackets’ record dip to 12-8.
Weatherford is 20-1 with the lone loss coming to Class 6A defending state champ Owasso at the Tournament of Champions.
